Kilimanjaro Rising Alone above the Savanna
Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Kilimanjaro Rising Alone above the Savanna is an original illustration set in Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. It lies in equatorial latitudes, where the climate is tundra — too cold for trees.
Kilimanjaro's broad volcanic dome rises in complete isolation above tawny East African grassland. A small bright ice cap crowns the flat-topped Kibo summit, the jagged Mawenzi peak sits lower to one side, umbrella acacias punctuate the foreground, and a dark montane forest belt wraps the lower slopes.
Why does an ice-capped volcanic massif rise alone above warm savanna?
The massif grew from repeated eruptions above the surrounding plains rather than as part of a continuous mountain chain, which explains its enormous free-standing profile. Height carries the summit into freezing air even though the base lies in tropical savanna, producing stacked vegetation zones from grassland through forest and moorland to alpine desert and ice. The isolated silhouette and abrupt ecological ladder are therefore two expressions of the same extreme rise in elevation.
