Tre Cime above the Dolomite Scree
Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Dolomites, Italy
Tre Cime above the Dolomite Scree is an original illustration set in Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Dolomites, Italy. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is tundra — too cold for trees.
The three immense pale walls of Tre Cime rise side by side above gray-beige scree in the Italian Dolomites. Their flat-cut faces catch warm evening light while deep vertical joints remain dark, low alpine grass and dwarf pines soften the foreground, and a tiny mountain refuge gives scale beneath a clear cool sky.
Why do three pale vertical towers rise above broad aprons of broken rock?
These towers are remnants of resistant Triassic carbonate platforms lifted into the Alps and divided by fractures. Freeze-thaw weathering and rockfall attack the joints, keeping the walls steep while accumulating broad talus aprons at their feet. The sharp boundary between bare vertical stone and gentler vegetated slopes records that contrast in erosion: intact dolomite forms the cliffs, whereas shattered debris can settle only at the angle of repose below.
