Train through the Great Karoo
Great Karoo, South Africa
Train through the Great Karoo is an original illustration set in Great Karoo, South Africa. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is cold semi-arid steppe.
A long mixed train cuts across an open semi-desert plain scattered with grey-green scrub, distant sheep and a solitary wind pump. Dark flat-topped hills interrupt the horizon beneath an enormous pale sky, while reddish rocks and dry grasses fill the foreground. With few trees or buildings, the railway, farm machinery and layered mesas carry nearly all of the scene's visual structure.
Why is there a wind pump on every farm out here?
The wind pump exists because livestock farms must lift groundwater where dependable surface streams are scarce. Vegetation stays low and widely spaced because rainfall is limited and irregular, leaving enough open ground for the railway to run across broad interior basins. Resistant dolerite caps protect the tops of mesas while softer material erodes away beneath them, which explains their abrupt table-like profiles. Sheep country, groundwater machinery and dolerite-capped plains form a geographic combination strongly associated with South Africa's Great Karoo.
