Floating Garden Strips
Inle Lake, Shan State, Myanmar
Floating Garden Strips is an original illustration set in Inle Lake, Shan State, Myanmar. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is monsoon-influenced humid subtropical — dry winters.
Long narrow bands of lush vegetables and reeds run in parallel across a shallow mountain lake, separated by canoe-width channels. Farmers balance in slender boats beside bamboo poles that anchor the beds, stilt houses line the distance, and blue Shan hills enclose the calm highland water.
Why do long garden strips float between narrow lake channels?
Because Inle Lake is shallow and rich in aquatic vegetation, farmers bind weeds and silt into buoyant beds that rise and fall with changing water level instead of flooding. Bamboo poles hold the strips in place, and channels preserve boat access for tending and harvest. The parallel floating fields, leg-rowed craft, stilted settlement, and mountain basin therefore emerge from one water-based farming system.
