Harbor Towers beneath a Green Peak
Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong
Harbor Towers beneath a Green Peak is an original illustration set in Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is monsoon-influenced humid subtropical — dry winters.
A green-and-white harbor ferry cuts across Victoria Harbour toward a wall of closely packed towers. Narrow high-rises climb the lower slopes of a dark green peak, a few older waterfront piers sit below them, and hazy ridges frame the protected channel behind the boat.
Why is one of the world's densest skylines squeezed between water and steep green hills?
Deep water made the harbor a trading gateway, but steep terrain leaves relatively little flat ground around its edge. Reclamation created more shoreline while scarce central land encouraged slender vertical construction against the hills. Cross-harbor ferries remain useful because water separates major urban districts, so the boat, compressed skyline and abrupt vegetated backdrop express the same harbor-and-mountain constraint.
