Arcade & Vintage Cars is an original illustration set in Old Havana, Cuba. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is tropical savanna — a pronounced dry season.

Two rounded tail-finned cars in worn pastel paint roll past peeling candy-coloured plaster facades above an arched colonnade. The colonnade shades the pavement, laundry hangs from an upper balcony, and the noon light is flat and hard.

Why are there so many cars of one vintage still running?

Cars of that vintage still working, in that number, means imports stopped abruptly at a particular date and the existing fleet was kept alive by repair — an economic history visible on the street. The colonnade is climate: a continuous shaded walkway in front of every building, so the pavement stays usable through tropical midday and sudden rain.
