Salt Crystal Shore is an original illustration set in Dead Sea Shore, Jordan. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is hot desert — evaporation far outruns rainfall.

Clusters of white mushroom-cap salt crystals rise from the shallows. The water is dense and mirror-still, reflecting a far shore ridge. A single line of dried salt marks an old waterline on the rocks, and the light is harsh and near-vertical.

Why does salt crystallise into mushroom shapes here?

Salt crystallising into mushroom caps happens where evaporation at the surface concentrates brine faster than it can mix downward. Water that still means unusually high density — dense enough to damp out ripples. A lake this saline, with an old waterline stranded above the current level, sits in a deep closed basin losing more to evaporation than it receives.
