Mineral Spring Terraces
Dallol, Danakil Depression, Ethiopia
Mineral Spring Terraces is an original illustration set in Dallol, Danakil Depression, Ethiopia. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is hot desert — evaporation far outruns rainfall.
Shallow emerald pools and yellow mineral terraces spread across a flat salt plain below a white, heat-hazed sky. Rust-red vents, brittle salt crusts, and tiny steaming openings interrupt the geometric surface, while distant low escarpments remain pale and barren beneath severe desert light.
Why do acidic springs paint terraces in sulfur yellow and green?
Because the Danakil Depression combines extreme evaporation, salt-rich sediments, and hot fluids rising through volcanic fractures, dissolved minerals are concentrated and precipitated at the surface. Sulfur compounds and iron-bearing deposits create vivid yellow, green, and orange zones, while evaporation builds delicate terraces and crusts. The below-sea-level basin, intense heat, and hydrothermal chemistry therefore produce a landscape unlike an ordinary hot spring.
