Painted Cube Slope

Painted Cube Slope is an original illustration set in Cape Town, South Africa. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is mediterranean — hot dry summers, wet winters.

A row of flat-roofed cube houses stands in saturated lime, pink and yellow solids, each with a single stone step and a small arched porch. A flat-topped mountain rises behind, and the summer morning light is clean and bright.

Why do these houses have flat roofs?

Flat roofs work only where rain is seasonal and never heavy for long — they would fail in a wetter climate. The cube form with a raised step and stoep is a vernacular carried by migration and then painted in colours that belong to this neighbourhood specifically. A flat-topped mountain that abrupt is a hard sandstone cap over softer rock.
