Rice-and-Fish Valley Mosaic
Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, India
Rice-and-Fish Valley Mosaic is an original illustration set in Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, India. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is subtropical highland — dry winters, mild summers.
A broad highland basin is tiled with shallow wet-rice plots separated by raised earthen bunds planted with millet. Clear feeder channels branch from forested hills, farmers work knee-deep beside small fish refuges in the paddies, and compact bamboo-and-timber villages occupy drier ground along the valley edge.
Why do shallow rice plots share their water with fish and millet-topped bunds?
Forested slopes conserve the watershed that feeds perennial streamlets, allowing a carefully divided gravity network to keep the flat basin wet without large reservoirs. Fish recycle nutrients and provide food inside the rice fields, while millet uses the higher, drier bunds and village organic matter returns fertility to limited land. This dense integration of protected uplands, irrigated paddy, fish trenches, and multi-use field boundaries distinguishes the Apatani system at Ziro.
