A firm limestone plateau provided a stable foundation and nearby stone for enormous royal tombs, while its position above the Nile floodplain kept the funerary ground beyond cultivated land. River transport connected the building sites to supplies from elsewhere in Egypt. Aridity and sparse vegetation expose the masonry silhouettes, linking this desert-edge pyramid group to the ancient Memphis landscape at Giza.
