Tilted Rainbow Ridges
Zhangye Danxia, Gansu, China
Tilted Rainbow Ridges is an original illustration set in Zhangye Danxia, Gansu, China. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is cold desert — arid, with freezing winters.
Long barren ridges fill the frame with diagonal bands of brick red, ochre, cream, and blue-grey sediment, folded into smooth crests and gullies. Sparse scrub dots the foreground, distant Qilian foothills appear dusty and cool, and low angled light clarifies the strata without turning the view into a saturated fantasy landscape.
Why do red, gold, and grey stripes tilt across these dry ridges?
Because layers of differently colored sandstone and silt accumulated over long periods, then tectonic uplift and compression tilted and folded the beds. In Gansu's dry climate, limited vegetation leaves those strata exposed, while wind and episodic runoff carve parallel gullies that repeat the banding across each ridge. The visible relationship between tilted layers, aridity, and erosion explains the rainbow-like pattern without requiring unusual vegetation or artificial coloring.
