Sandstone Pillars above a Sea of Forest
Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie, China
Sandstone Pillars above a Sea of Forest is an original illustration set in Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie, China. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is humid subtropical — hot summers, no dry season.
Hundreds of quartz-sandstone pillars rise as separate vertical islands from dense subtropical forest. Their gray walls are banded and fractured, small pines cling to flat or rounded tops, and pale mist occupies the deep slots while nearer columns remain crisp and dark.
Why do thousands of narrow stone columns stand apart above the forest?
Long uplift raised thick sandstone cut by a dense network of vertical joints. Streams, frost, roots and chemical weathering widened those fractures, removing weaker rock while resistant masses remained as narrow towers. Humid vegetation protects ledges and exaggerates the contrast between green caps and exposed walls, so joint pattern, extreme relief and forest-filled chasms all come from prolonged erosion of a fractured plateau.
