Rippling Green Fields

Rippling Green Fields is an original illustration set in Moravia, Czechia. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is warm-summer humid continental.

Broad curved plough stripes flow over rolling hills like waves, seen from high above. Two alternating greens interleave with a single band of rapeseed yellow. One small copse sits in a hollow, and the late spring evening light rakes across the ridges.

Why is the ploughing curved instead of straight?

Ploughing along the contour on rolling ground is erosion control, and the curves make the topography legible from the air. Alternating strips are crop rotation done in place rather than field by field. Deep, uniformly fertile soil over gently rolling hills, farmed this intensively, is wind-blown loess laid down at the edge of former ice sheets.
