A massive rust-red rock with a long rounded skyline rises above an almost level sandy plain. Vertical grooves and shaded recesses mark its face, while scattered low shrubs and pale grass tussocks leave most of the foreground open beneath a clear sky.

Why does this rounded red rock rise alone from a much flatter desert?

Uluru is resistant arkosic sandstone left exposed as surrounding material weathered away. Iron-bearing minerals oxidize at the surface, producing the red outer skin, while runoff follows joints and deepens grooves during occasional rain. Its continuous rounded mass, red sandy plain, and sparse dryland vegetation distinguish this central Australian inselberg from a layered mesa or a pile of boulders.
