Ring Earthen Fortress

Ring Earthen Fortress is an original illustration set in Western Fujian, China. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is humid subtropical — hot summers, no dry season.

A giant circular rammed-earth building rings an open inner courtyard beneath a continuous band of dark tiled roof. Small windows appear only high on the towering outer wall. Tea-covered hills rise behind under bright late-morning light.

Why would an entire extended family live in one round building?

A single defensible ring housing an entire extended family is architecture as social structure: one entrance, blank lower walls, all windows facing inward. Rammed earth thick enough for that also moderates a humid subtropical climate — cool inside through summer, dry through the rainy season. Tea on the surrounding slopes marks warm, wet, well-drained hill country.
