Painted Earthen Compound
Royal Court of Tiébélé, Burkina Faso
Painted Earthen Compound is an original illustration set in Royal Court of Tiébélé, Burkina Faso. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is tropical savanna — a pronounced dry season.
An enclosed compound of low earthen buildings fills the frame: one rounded figure-eight house, one circular hut, one rectangular dwelling, conical granaries, and narrow passages behind a protective wall. Black, white, and red geometric mural bands cover the smooth walls; women renew a small section of plaster while a broad savanna tree casts hard shade.
Why are these low earthen houses shaped and painted so differently?
Earth, straw, wood, and dung make thick walls from materials available on the savanna, buffering daytime heat while the tight compound limits exposed openings. Different building plans encode household roles rather than random decoration, and renewed mineral-and-organic wall coatings protect the earthen surface from seasonal rain. The combination of mixed hut geometry, enclosed circulation, and women-maintained graphic render belongs to Kasena building practice at Tiébélé.
