Santiago's Skyline beneath the Andes
Santiago Metropolitan Center, Chile
Santiago's Skyline beneath the Andes is an original illustration set in Santiago Metropolitan Center, Chile. It lies in the subtropics, where the climate is warm-summer mediterranean.
Santiago spreads across a broad flat basin beneath an enormous wall of snow-streaked Andes peaks. The tall glass form of Gran Torre Santiago rises among lower blocks, the green ridge of Cerro San Cristóbal carries a small summit silhouette, and a divided avenue with plane trees leads through dry summer light toward the mountains.
Why does a modern metropolis fill this flat basin directly beneath the Andes?
The city occupies a level depression between Chile's Coastal Range and the Andes, where transport routes, rivers and buildable land converge. That enclosed setting makes the mountains appear unusually close and also traps winter air pollution beneath temperature inversions. Snow and high-elevation precipitation feed rivers that cross a region with dry summers, while the isolated hill of San Cristóbal provides a natural lookout above an urban plain that has expanded outward in every direction.
