Black-Lava Vineyard Grid
Criação Velha, Pico Island, Azores, Portugal
Black-Lava Vineyard Grid is an original illustration set in Criação Velha, Pico Island, Azores, Portugal. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.
Thousands of low black-basalt walls divide a coastal lava field into tiny rectangular vineyard cells, each holding a few low grapevines rooted among cracked rock. Narrow paths run toward a dark-blue Atlantic shore, workers tend vines by hand, and the broad volcanic cone of Pico rises through broken maritime cloud behind the geometric grid.
Why is every grapevine enclosed by its own low maze of black stone?
The walls use stone cleared from nearly soil-free lava plots and turn it into shelter: their rough mass breaks Atlantic wind, catches warmth, and shields leaves and fruit from salt spray. Small currais protect each cluster where machinery cannot cross, so cultivation remains organized by hand across an otherwise hostile coastal flow. Black basalt compartments, ocean exposure, vines emerging from rock, and the dominating volcanic cone make this field system specific to Pico Island.
