Stilted Granary Village is an original illustration set in Galicia, Spain. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is warm-summer mediterranean.

A raised granite granary stands on mushroom-capped stone pillars, with a small stone cross at one end. Vertical ventilation slits stripe its long walls. Green pasture and hedged fields surround it, and the light is dim, even and shadowless in fine drizzle.

Why does a granary stand on pillars with mushroom-shaped caps?

The mushroom caps are rodent guards: a rat can climb the pillar but cannot get past the overhang. Raising the whole store off the ground and slotting the walls keeps grain dry and ventilated where the air is permanently damp. Building it in granite rather than timber says hard rock underfoot — and a climate that would rot wood.
