Raised Coral Terrace
South Pacific Raised-Reef Island
Raised Coral Terrace is an original illustration set in South Pacific Raised-Reef Island. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is tropical rainforest — hot and wet all year.
A pale porous limestone cliff shows unmistakable fossil coral texture in its face. Two distinct horizontal terraces step above the present sea level, with knife-like solution pinnacles along their edges. Below, a narrow wave-cut platform meets warm shallow water.
Why is a coral reef standing high above the sea?
Coral only grows in the shallow sunlit zone at sea level, so a reef standing well above the waves means the land has risen — usually because it sits near a plate boundary being squeezed upward. Each terrace records a separate pause. The pinnacles are rainwater dissolving the limestone since it emerged. The whole island is essentially an old reef lifted into the air.
