Parliament on the Danube at Budapest
Parliament Embankment, Budapest, Hungary
Parliament on the Danube at Budapest is an original illustration set in Parliament Embankment, Budapest, Hungary. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is oceanic — mild, wet through the year.
The Hungarian Parliament stretches along the Pest bank of the Danube as a long pale neo-Gothic façade with a tall central red dome and repeated pointed towers. The broad river carries a low sightseeing boat, a stone embankment runs beneath the building, and wooded Buda hills with a few historic silhouettes rise across the water behind a chain bridge.
Why does a vast neo-Gothic parliament face the river from Budapest's flat bank?
Buda developed on defensible hills while Pest expanded across the flatter opposite bank, and their unification turned the Danube from an edge into the ceremonial center of one capital. A national parliament of exceptional length could occupy the level riverside and present its principal elevation to traffic moving along the water. Bridges then stitched the two contrasting terrains together, so the dome, broad channel, flat monumental bank and rising western hills all express the same nineteenth-century urban union.
