The Alhambra above Granada
Alhambra, Granada, Spain
The Alhambra above Granada is an original illustration set in Alhambra, Granada, Spain. It lies in mid-latitudes, where the climate is mediterranean — hot dry summers, wet winters.
The Alhambra stretches along Sabika Hill as a long red-ochre complex of crenellated walls, square towers and cypress-filled palace gardens. White houses of the Albayzín climb the opposite slope across the Darro valley, while the pale snow-streaked Sierra Nevada rises behind both ridges under dry Andalusian light.
Why does this red fortress occupy a long ridge between city and snowy mountains?
The ridge offered a defensible platform above Granada while remaining close to water brought from the mountains through carefully engineered channels. Palaces, gardens and the Generalife could therefore combine security with fountains, orchards and shaded courtyards in a summer-dry climate. Across the narrow valley, the older Albayzín follows a dense pattern of hillside lanes, so fortress ridge, residential hill and high snowy watershed form a connected urban landscape.
