Blue Agave Highlands
Central Mexican Highlands
Blue Agave Highlands is an original illustration set in Central Mexican Highlands. It lies in the tropics, where the climate is subtropical highland — dry winters, mild summers.
Large symmetrical rosettes of thick blue-grey spear leaves stand in precise parallel rows across rolling ground. Rust-red volcanic soil shows between them. A low broad volcanic ridge closes the horizon, and the dry-season afternoon light is clear and hard.
Why do agave leaves carry a waxy blue bloom?
Agave stores water in those thick leaves and wears a waxy blue bloom to reflect sun — a plant built for a place that is bright and dry for months, then abruptly wet. Planting it in machine-straight rows makes it a crop rather than a wild stand. Red volcanic soil under a shield-shaped ridge, at an altitude high enough to keep the afternoon mild, narrows the highlands considerably.
